Excellence in Student Achievement Award

The Refugee and Newcomer Supports Program was recognized for being named the APS recipient of the New Mexico School Boards Association Excellence in Student Achievement Award.

Chosen to represent Albuquerque Public Schools by the APS Board of Education, staff of the Refugee and Newcomer Supports team are the Albuquerque Public Schools’ recipients of the 2021 Excellence in Student Achievement Awards from the New Mexico School Boards Association. The Refugee and Newcomer team includes case managers, specialists and teachers who focus their skills on helping refugees and newcomers succeed. They speak various languages and work alongside other APS staff to help explain complicated concepts and provide academic and social support to newcomers.  The award, sponsored by the New Mexico School Boards Association, is presented to individuals or teams who have played an important role in improving student achievement in their local school district.  The Board of Education was thrilled to present it to:

  • Program Manager: Brandon Baca
  • Refugee Case Managers: Dina Raheem, Twite Edmond Mwamba, Mohammad Ismail
  • Newcomer Specialists:  Farida Ibrahim, Parwin Hussaini Wafa, Mbarak Hussein, Chantal Muhumure
  • Newcomer Teachers:  Liz Bradford, Natalie Perez
