Essay Contest Winners

Nine APS students were named Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month Essay Contest winners.

National Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, recognized annually from September 15 through October 15, honors the history, cultural diversity, and unique contributions of individuals and communities whose ancestry can be traced back to Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Spain.  As part of the month-long celebration, the Office of Equity and Engagement sponsored an essay contest.  The theme was “My People / Mi Gente.” In Spanish, mi gente literally translates to “my people.”  Mi gente is used to refer to a group of people you strongly identify with such as your family, friends, or community.  The contest was open to all Albuquerque Public Schools students in elementary, middle, and high school.  Essays were evaluated on grammar, spelling, and composition, the clarity and effectiveness in expressing the theme, and how well they answered the following questions:

  • Who makes up “your people?”
  • How do they help you in being more courageous, resilient, passionate, strong, and empathetic?
  • How does our gente teach you about love and acceptance?
  • How do you help your gente in strengthening those attributes?
  • What else have your learned from your gente or how else have they helped you or you them?

Nine students were awarded first, second or third place for their essays.
