Dr. Heather Bassett

Dr. Bassett was recognized for being named to the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce Leadership Albuquerque Class of 2021-2022.

Leadership Albuquerque develops knowledgeable and engaged civic leaders and prepares professionals at all levels and from a variety of industries to expand their influence in their organizations and in our community.  The program is in its 42nd year. Throughout this ten-month course, each cohort of approximately 40 students gains a deep understanding of issues that impact the economic growth and quality of life in our city and state.

Here's a few things you might not know about Heather.  She is from Mankato, Minnesota, a town whose original name was misspelled and the misspelling took.  And, it is known for its great parks and trails.  After she graduated from Luther College in Iowa, Heather moved to New Mexico in 1996 from a phone interview with Gallup High School.  She started her graduate career at UNM with funding from the James Madison Fellowship Foundation in DC.  She earned a Master's degree in Secondary education and another Master's in History and then her Ph.D. from the College of Education.  Heather has taught at five schools in three districts and online for a state agency and UNM.  She loved teaching high school and thinks her school librarian job was the most amazing high school experience.  She also worked as an education sales consultant for districts in a five-state territory.  Her own three young adult children keep her grounded in what matters for our students.  In her work in the Board Services Office, she represents APS, schools, district departments, and the Board of Education.  We are proud of your accomplishment and thankful for your work.  Congratulations, Dr. Bassett!
