2024 Meetings

  •  Board of Education: First and third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. at the Alice and Bruce King Educational Complex (APS administration building), 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE 
  • Finance Committee: Fourth Wednesday of the month at 8 a.m. virtually 
    • Members: Crystal Tapia-Romero (chair), Janelle Astorga, Ronalda Tome-Warito, Heather Benavidez Courtney Jackson 
  • Audit Committee: Fourth Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m. virtually as needed and/or required by law

Meeting dates and times are subject to change. APS Board of Education meetings are posted at least 10 days in advance, and meeting agendas at least 3 days in advance.

Requesting Accessibility Accommodations 

Contact the Board of Education Office at (505) 880-3729 at least one week prior to the meeting or as soon as can be provided in various accessible formats:

  • If you are in need of a reader, amplifier, qualified sign language interpreter, or any other form of auxiliary aid or service to attend or participate in the hearing or meeting
  • If a summary or other type of accessible format is needed.

Closed Captioning

Closed captioning will continue to be provided in English for Board of Education Zoom meetings live-streamed to YouTube.

Types of Board Meetings

  • Regular Meetings: Regular meetings are public meetings where the business of the board is conducted and where the public may voice opinions or concerns during the Public Forum portion of the meeting.
  • Special Meetings: Special meetings also provide a venue where board members can ask for and are given in-depth information on a variety of topics. Often, work studies on budget or instructional issues are scheduled during special meetings.
  • Emergency Meetings: Emergency meetings are called to address issues that require immediate action to protect the health, safety and welfare of students and employees of the district, to protect the property of the district or to avoid substantial financial loss to the district.
  • Executive Session: The board may meet in an executive session in accordance with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act and Open Meetings Resolution of the Board.
  • Committee Meetings: The committees are responsible for addressing board business and work independently, but in collaboration with each other. Ad hoc committees and task force committees or commissions may be appointed by the president or the Board of Education as a group. Committees include: Capital Outlay, Property and Technology, District Equity and Inclusion, Finance, Audit, and Policy and Instruction.

New Mexico Open Meetings Act

All meetings of the Board of Education, including committee meetings, comply with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.

Meeting Notice, Agenda, and Minutes Compliance

  • Notice of Board Meetings: All meetings of the Board of Education, including committee meetings, comply with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.
  • Agendas: Agendas for all board meetings are prepared by using internal procedures and are posted in a manner that complies with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.
    • The draft agenda will be available to the public at least seventy-two (72) hours prior to the meeting.
    • Except for emergency matters, the Board of Education will take action only on the items that have been officially posted on the final agenda at least thirty-six (36) hours prior to the meeting, in compliance with the Open Meetings Act.
    • However, an item may be removed or moved to another position on the agenda by board members at the time of the regular or special meeting before the agenda is accepted by board members.
  • Minutes: Draft minutes of each board or committee meeting are prepared within 10 working days after the meeting to which they pertain. Minutes are distributed according to the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.

Meeting Procedural Compliance

  • Quorum of the Board: Four board members comprise a quorum for the transaction of board business at a regular, special, closed or emergency meeting. A quorum must be present for action to be taken.
  • Voting Procedures: All board members may vote on any matter coming before it, unless a conflict of interest exists. Board members cannot vote by proxy. They may participate in a board or committee meeting by telephone in accordance with the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.
  • Public Attendance: Regular, special, emergency and committee meetings are open to the public. Executive sessions are those meetings that fall under specific guidelines in the New Mexico Open Meetings Act.
