Answers should be brief and concise.

Why do you want to be a board member for Albuquerque Public Schools?

I am running to focus on these areas: firstly, transparency and accountability on all board decisions and policies. Second to make sure students are given the best opportunity to learn. Thirdly to improve the efficiency of the board.

What is your interest in education?

I believe everyone should have an interest in education.  This is how we improve the district we live in.  Stronger schools react to their community and children’s needs dynamically and quickly, which will impact our community for years to come.

In what ways will you support the mission and vision of the district?

I will provide clear and transparent directives, representative of our community, from the Board to the superintendent, and staff. All directive will be broadcast to the community at large. Student success will drive all decisions.

How will you work with the superintendent?

It is critical to have a working relationship with the superintendent.  There should be clear and measurable goals and plans set up for the superintendent to be held accountable for.

What is your past and current involvement with Albuquerque Public Schools?

I have served as a volunteer with APS to help teachers in the classroom.

What should be the relationship between the superintendent and Board of Education?

The relationship needs to be a close working partnership.  There needs to be constant communication on all issues, goals and plans.  There needs to be transparency so all people in the district are aware of APS’s plans.  The board needs to give the superintendent clear instructions an understanding of accountability.

What qualities and skills would you bring to the Board of Education?

I have severed on several boards at the local and national level.  I am aware how to run and manage an effective board and meeting.  I understand how policies, budgets, and management decisions should be used to provide the best classroom experience for all students.

What school or community volunteer activities have you participated in related to the community?

I have coached football, basketball, swimming, baseball for kids from ages 3 to 21.  I have been a Big Brother, YMCA volunteer, UNM alumni and student advisor, as well as served as a Kappa Sigma Advisor,

How do you plan to work with constituents?

I will make sure that constituents are informed of current APS policies and that their voices are the basis of future change. I will ensure the wishes and concerns are heard by the board and APS.  The board website needs to be redone to make it easier for all constituents to be informed and to communicate with the board.

What do you see as opportunities and challenges to the district?

The opportunities as a new board member will be to unify the board so decisions are clear, timely and in the best interest of the students.  We must lead with polices tht are in the best interest of our community and not follow what other districts are doing.  We must not allow politics to influence policies or decision.  We must review the budget and ask hard questions, so we know where every penny is being spent and why.

What do you think is the best way for the district to accomplish the district’s goals?

I believe these goals need to be looked at and updated to address current needs of the District.

  • Albuquerque Public Schools will provide equitable access and opportunity in a safe and supportive environment that addresses the individual needs of students.

The board priority should be driven by students’ needs; safe, supportive classrooms are the absolute minimum needed for children to learn.

  • Albuquerque Public Schools will align the work of schools and departments and create a system of high-quality accountability for instruction, social, emotional and physical health and safety.

The school board should provide clear instruction to the superintendent that provides clear accountability for the direction of the district.

  • Albuquerque Public Schools will create a clear direction for efficient and effective operations to better serve students and improve staff morale.

The Board is responsible for listening to constituents and providing clear direction.

  • Albuquerque Public Schools will improve all modes of communications to better inform and engage the Albuquerque community invested in public education.

This is an areas in which we lack. The board needs to invest time in providing a means of two way communication. To effectively communicate with all constituents the board needs to examine many means of communication.

If elected, how will you work with the current board?

I will learn and understand the challenges and issues that the current board is dealing with.  I will offer suggestions for transparency and efficiency.  I will encourage better communication with parents.
