Welcome Back!

In his first message of the new school year, Superintendent Scott Elder extends a warm welcome to new educators and to school staff who are returning from summer break.

I love to see schools across the metro coming back to life as our teachers, educational assistants, nurses, counselors, secretaries, and others return from a much-deserved summer hiatus. And I can’t wait to see schools bustling with activity later this week when students get back!

I had the honor of addressing our new teachers during orientation on Friday. Seeing their energy and excitement was heartwarming. I assured them that it’s normal to be nervous and thanked them for embarking on a career where they will make a difference in the lives of children for years to come! Join me in welcoming these new teachers, counselors, librarians, and others who are beginning their careers today, and please do what you can to make sure they feel at home at Albuquerque Public Schools.

It’s been a busy summer.

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard that I will be leaving APS at the end of this school year. Serving as your superintendent has been a tremendous honor, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to lead this district that has been my home for more than 30 years. The superintendent is the face of the district, but the work that each and every one of you do is what keeps APS running. I will be here until June 30, 2024, so there will be plenty of time for goodbyes later.

Right now, we need to focus on the task at hand, which is the new school year and how we’re going to improve student outcomes. We’ve come up with a strategic plan to serve as our roadmap as we push to make things better for our students. I know you all have a lot on your plates as you gear up for the first day of school on Thursday, so more on our exciting Emerging Stronger strategic plan later.

For now, I just want to welcome school personnel back and wish everyone a happy and productive school year! Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work on providing our students with the best education possible.
