Fall is in the Air

In his weekly message to employees, Supt. Elder writes about the annual United Way campaign and this year's door and workspace decorating contest.

Fall is in the air. And on our doors and windows, too.

Walk through an APS school or office building, and you will see decorations of falling leaves and pumpkin patches, scarecrows and skeletons, monsters and mummies, balloons and bats. A common thread weaving through all of this décor is a simple sign stating, #APSPROUD.

Yes, it's that time of year again. Time to show your APS spirit as we kick off the annual United Way campaign.

This year, the APS Education Foundation, which assists with the fundraising campaign, is sponsoring a Door and Workspace Decorating Contest through October. They have already received many photos and social media posts. I have seen some of the entries, and I must say, there are lots of very creative people in our midst!

The contest is fun, and I am glad to see many of you finding joy in your work. It has been a hard couple of years, no doubt, and it's easy to get caught up in the drama and the doldrums. But we should never lose sight of the value of our work. What you do is essential. It is meaningful. And I hope it fills you with happiness and satisfaction.

It does me! The sights and sounds of public education in autumn serve as constant reminders of how fortunate I am to be your superintendent, from cheers in stands and laughter on playgrounds to hallways covered in student work and classrooms buzzing with activity. Walk down those halls, peek in those classrooms, and you'll notice it, too. That proverbial light bulb switching on again and again. Education at its best.

We are in the education business, and we're good at it. But we can't do it alone. We need partners like the United Way to help our students reach their full potential. You will soon get a personalized online pledge form from United Way. I hope you consider giving. You can choose where your money goes, including your school's parent organization, a favorite club or activity, or even our very own Foundation. Give what you can. Every dollar makes a difference.

Thanks for all you do. You make me #APSPROUD.
