APS Board Evaluates Interim Supt. Scott Elder

Elder stepped in as interim superintendent on July 1.

The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education met in closed session today to conduct an informal evaluation of  Interim Superintendent Scott Elder. Elder was appointed interim superintendent in May and officially took over duties of superintendent when Raquel Reedy retired on July 1.

Elder’s contract as interim superintendent runs through June 30, 2021, and includes an annual salary of $225,000.

“The job of a superintendent for a high poverty urban district like ours is always tough, but the challenges the pandemic, economic crisis, and civil unrest have created and complicated the daily realities schools face beyond anything we could have ever imagined,” said APS Board President Dr. David  Peercy. “We are fortunate to have a seasoned, compassionate, and flexible educator like Scott Elder to help us navigate our way through this public education crisis.”

The board suspended its national search for a new superintendent when schools closed in March due to the spread of the coronavirus. It voted on Monday to continue its national search for a permanent superintendent, opening it up to potential additional semi-finalists. Elder is expected to apply.
