Need a GED?

Information on qualifying to take the General Educational Development Test (GED).

What is the GED?

GED stands for the Tests of General Educational Development. The GED Test Battery is a national examination developed by the GED Testing Service of the American Council on Education (ACE).

Age Requirements

The student seeking a GED must be at least 16 years old.

How it Works

If you are an existing APS student:

  1. First, you must withdraw from high school.
  2. Then come in to the APS Service Center (map) with the following:
    • withdrawal paperwork from your school
    • your birth certificate
    • parent or legal guardian (if you bring your legal guardian, they must bring their guardianship paperwork)
  3. If your paperwork is approved, APS will issue you a "New Mexico Underage Permission Hardship Form" provided by the State of New Mexico.
  4. Then you'll need to go to a GED Testing Center in Albuquerque (typically in person) to pre-register for the test. Search for a testing center near you or call one of the following centers in Albuquerque:
  • CNM Testing Center: 224-3244
  • UNM Testing Center: 277-5346
  • YDI Testing Center: 242-7306

If you live outside the APS attendance area:

Please contact your school district for information on earning a GED.

If you are from out of state:

You will be required to show proof that your parent(s) now live within the APS attendance area. Bring proof of address such as a driver's license or lease agreement. Questions? Contact the GED Office at 855-9042.

If you are in a charter school:

Note that APS does not process the GED for Charter Schools. Please contact your Charter School administration for more information.

If you are homeschooled:

Please go directly to a GED Testing Center for the"NM Underage Permission Hardship Form" and to learn more about taking the GED Test.
