Applying for Financial Aid
APS high schools host workshops to help students and their families fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Many APS students would most assuredly qualify for federal money to continue their education after high school if they'd just fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). We want to see more of our students apply for federal student aid, which is awarded based on financial need.
High school college and career counselors are hosting workshops to help students and their families fill out the online application. The workshops will be held at APS high schools during the spring semester. Many of the workshops will have Spanish speakers.
Why Students Don't Get Financial Aid
What to Bring to a FAFSA Completion Workshop
2013 FAFSA Completion Workshop Dates and Times
Why Seek Financial Aid
- There is an estimated $150 billion in aid available for students.
- The aid is available for four-year universities, community college and trade school.
- About two-thirds of full-time undergraduate college students receive some type of financial aid.
- Financial aid comes in the form of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study.
Why Students Don't Get Financial Aid
The online application process – the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA) – can be a bit intimidating because it requires tax and other financial information to complete.
You can preview the FAFSA application, get an idea of what type of information it requires, and even print out a worksheet to fill out by looking at the
Top reasons the FAFSA is rejected:
- No parent signature (this can be submitted electronically)
- No student signature (also can be submitted electronically)
- Application was incomplete
- Social security number wasn’t included for student, father or mother
- Marital status was left blank
What to Bring to a FAFSA Completion Workshop
When you come into one of the FAFSA completion workshops, you should plan to bring the following with you:
- Bring your FAFSA PIN with you (go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for a FAFSA PIN)
Note: Students and parents are encouraged to apply for a Federal Student Aid PIN which serves as an identifier and as an electronic signature. It works much like the personal identification number you get from your bank.
- 2012 federal income tax return (for student and parents)
- 2012 W-2 and 1099 forms
- 2012 bank statements
Other items you might want to bring with you:
- Social Security numbers for students and parents
- Driver’s license number, if you have one
- Records of stocks, bonds, and other investments
- Records of untaxed income received such as Social Security Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), welfare or veteran benefits
- Business or farm records, if applicable
- Alien registration number if you are not a U.S. citizen
