All About Tumblr

Learn about this popular social-networking site and how teenagers are using it today.

Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking website, owned by Yahoo! Inc; essentially a cross between Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and a blog.

Tumblr allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog. Users can follow other users' blogs, as well as make their blogs. Users can also set their own personal blogs to be "private" or password protected.

Facts about Tumblr

  • Tumblr hosts over 209.3 million blogs, with 94.9 billion posts in total,
  • Over 69 million unique posts are created each day,
  • Half of Tumblr's active users are under the age of 25.

Information for Parents

  • Inappropriate images are easy to find. Pornographic images and videos, depictions of violence, self-harm, drug use, and offensive language are easily searchable.
  • Privacy is hard to achieve.  Users can create set their Tumblr blog settings to private, but they first must create a public blog. The first blog you create with Tumblr will always be marked as public, so only if you create multiple blogs, will you be allowed to have a private blog.
  • Posts are created to be re-blogged and shared. Tumblr functions similar to Twitter in effortlessly enabling users to reblog posts; make sure that your children understand this, and understand that anything they blog, others can repost.
