General Information
Solar Eclipse Event is May 20: Bernalillo County and the Albuquerque Astronomical Society are hosting viewing of the solar eclipse beginning at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 20, at the county’s Regional Recreation Complex, 5601 University Blvd. SE (near the Hard Rock Pavilion, south of the airport). The free event will feature presentations by the astronomical society, rocket making with the Albq. Rocketry Society, and making of pinhole cameras and protective glasses to view the event with the Mountain View Community Center. The eclipse is expected to begin at 6:28 p.m. For more information call the Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Dept. at 314-0400 or 314-0416.
7-Bar Alumni Reunion Set for May 24: 7-Bar Elementary is having an alumni reunion celebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 24at the school, 4501 Seven Bar Loop NW 87114. Highlights include games, jumpers, memory slide show, karaoke, free goodies, and low cost fair food! For more information, call 899-2797.
Retirement Reception for Asst. Supt. Diego Gallegos is May 24: A public reception for retiring Asst. Supt. Dr. Diego Gallegos is set for 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, May 24, in the Rio Grande Conference Room at the APS Building, 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE. Those attending are invited to bring a photo or memento to share as part of timeline marking Dr. Gallegos more than 30 years with Albuquerque Public Schools.
Del Note High School to Host Alumni Event: The Del Norte community will celebrate the many fond memories that were created at the old Castle and tour the new building June 7, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Music, refreshments and memories will be served. School Counselor Assn. Holding Fundraiser May 23: The New Mexico School Counselor Association is hosting a fundraiser at the California Pizza Kitchen on May 23. Proceeds benefit the association. Anti-Bullying Workshops for Secondary School Staff Set June 1, 2: APS Health and Wellness, Safe Schools/Healthy Students is offering a free workshop entitled, “Springing Forward, Bouncing Back - Strengthening Resiliency and School Climate through Positive Youth Development” for middle and high school staff from 8:30 a.m. – noon, June 1 or 2 at the Madonna Retreat Center, 4040 St. Joseph’s Place 87120 (next to St. Pius). Project WET Workshop set for June 13: The Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority will hold a Project WET Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 13, in the BEMP classroom at Bosque School for teachers who are looking for ways to enrich next year’s curriculum with hands-on science, math, and language arts activities. Sandia Labs has purchased the guides so there is no cost associated with the workshop – snacks and lunch are also provided. ‘Destino Universidad’ Coming to UNM on May 24: The University of New Mexico presents Destino Universidad, a free bilingual town hall conference and financial aid resources from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 24 in the UNM Student Union Building ballrooms. Museum Offering Summer Science Camps for Grades K-8: The New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science offers summer science camps for elementary and middle school age students during July and August. Camps vary in activities and cost according to age group. Members receive a 10 percent discount. National Hispanic Youth Research & Leadership Program set for July: The UNM National Hispanic Youth Research and Leadership Program focuses on providing educational opportunities/careers in STEM fields to the Hispanic community.
