Bernalillo County Seeks Seniors Citizens Ages 100 and Older: As part of National County Government Month and Centennial efforts in celebrating 100 years of statehood, the Bernalillo County Commission will honor centenarians with a special birthday event in April. If you know someone who is 100 years of age or older, or turns 100 in 2012 and is a resident of Bernalillo County, call Art Sanchez at 315-3318 or e-mail artsanchez@bernco.gov with the name of the centenarian and a contact person’s name, phone number or address (a person who can assist the centenarian). Geranium Sales Benefit Clothing Program: The Assistance League of Albuquerque’s 2012 Geranium Sale, proceeds of which support the League’s Operation School Bell Clothing Program, is in full swing. The 4‑inch plants come in red, pink, and salmon at $4 each ($2 of each $4 is tax deductible). Brain Research Demonstration set for March 6: This hour-long workshop provides brain research and how-to’s on helping students take tests, focus attention, learn to behave, enhance student learning, and how stress impacts health. The workshop is set for 6:30 p.m., March 6 at Madison Middle School Library. The information is summarized from the last six years of training at the Brain Research Conference and books from world renowned neuro-psychologists and cognitive scientists. Air Force Research Lab Educator on Loan Opportunity: The Air Force Research Lab is looking for a current, licensed teacher with 3-10 years of classroom experience and a strong background in math and science to join the AFRL La Luz Academy team for the 2012-2013 school year. This is a full-time, school-year position at the Research Lab facility on Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque. After completing this assignment, it is expected that the candidate will return to their school district to continue teaching, and share best practices with their colleagues. World History Association Conference for Students & Teachers: The World History Association 2012 International Conference will be held June 27- 30 at Albuquerque High School. The two themes this year are "Frontiers and Borders in World History," and "Indigenous Peoples in World History," although any world history topic is welcome. American Graduate Teacher Town Hall on April 18: KNME New Mexico PBS invites teachers to participate in a series of televised town hall meetings on improving graduation rates in New Mexico, as part of a CPB-funded initiative, American Graduate - Let’s Make it Happen. The first town hall meeting is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., April 18, at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center Auditorium, 1634 University Blvd NE. Summer Science Camps for 6-8 Grade Students: Dr. Bernard Harris, Jr. and ExxonMobil Foundation are partnering to provide ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camps to inspire the next generation of innovators. As part of the effort to increase interest in STEM, students learn about rewarding career options in these fields. Eligible applicants must be entering sixth, seventh or eighth grades in the fall of 2012. Camps will be held at 20 campuses nationwide. For more information, visit www.theharrisfoundation.org.
Scholarship Awards $7,500 for Student Athletes: High school seniors can compete for “Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) Award,” which provides a $7,500 scholarship from the Milk Processor Education Program. Twenty-five winners and their parents can attend a SAMMY awards weekend at Walt Disney World in June and be pictured in a special ad in a June 2012 edition of USA TODAY. Teachers, coaches, counselors, parents and students themselves can submit nominations for the award. The nominees are judged on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, community service and a milk essay. Applications are accepted online at www.sammyapplication.com until March 19.
