UNM Hosts New Mexico Hispanic Youth Symposium: A four-day, three-night college prep program provides tools and resources for becoming a better student, going to college, and getting into a great career is set for June 15-18 at UNM. Participants must have a 2.5 GPA or above, be class of 2012 or 2013, and live/attend high school in New Mexico. Cost is $10. Apply on-line at http://www.hispanicyouth.org/symposium-new-mexico. Scholarship Offered for African-American, Hispanic Seniors: Four ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholarships will be awarded to two males and two females--$5,000 each—two African American and two Hispanic 2010 high school graduates in school districts represented by the Council of the Great City Schools. Toyota Offers Scholarships for Teachers to Study in Galapagos: The 2010 Toyota International Teacher Program to the Galapagos Islands, a fully-funded professional development program for U.S. educators. Funded by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., and administered by the Institute of International Education, the program aims to advance environmental stewardship and global connectedness in U.S. schools and communities.
The program is set for Nov. 20 – Dec. 4, 2010 and the deadline to apply is May 26, 2010. Full-time classroom teachers and librarians of all subjects for grades 6 – 12 are eligible to apply. Natural History Museum Offers Teaching Fellowship: The NM Museum of Natural History and Science along with the Albuquerque BioPark offers a fellowship for elementary school teachers to participate in an 80-hour program. The fellowship also offers a $1,000 stipend. Six teachers will be chosen for the fellowship, which meets June 7-10 at the Natural History Museum and June 14-17 at the BioPark. Fourth Annual Lt. Gov’s Summit on Financial Education: “The Lt. Gov’s Summit on Financial Education”, a day of free financial education workshops and information on such topics as investing in today’s economy, investor protection, and financial literacy sponsored by The New Mexico Coalition for Financial Education and the N.M. National Math Conference set for April 27-30: The National Math Recovery/ AddVantage Math conference will be in Albuquerque April 27-30. Internationally recognized researchers and authors will speak and sessions for application of math intervention in the classroom and RTI settings will be offered. Sandia Mountain NHC Teacher Workshop March 27: The Sandia Mountain Natural History Center is hosting a “Wild Sandias” workshop for educators from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., March 27 at 60 Columbine Lane, Cedar Crest on integrating the multi-dimensional experience of nature into teaching. Teacher Dossier Overview Session Set April 8: The Albuquerque Teachers Federation is offering teachers an overview and information on the Professional Development Dossier requirements and process from 4:30 – 7:30 p.m., April 8 at the ATF Office, 530 Jefferson St. NE. Free open lab sessions for help in submitting a dossier are offered 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., March 13 and March 27 in the computer labs at the Montgomery Complex.
Fractal Institute Workshop for Elementary Teachers: Participants can learn to use fractals to teach math and science standards. One workshop remains, 1-5 p.m., April 2-3. Anne Frank Exhibit Features Panel Discussion, Films: Representatives from the NM Office of African American Affairs, the NAACP, and the state Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will participate in a panel discussion on the subject of “Here and Nov – The Courage to Stand in 2010” at 3 p.m., Saturday, March, 27, at the Coronado Center Exhibit Space, next to Fuddrucker’s.

Jazz Dance Presentation is April 1: The Performers Ballet and Jazz Company will provide a free presentation on jazz dance styles at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., April 1 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Teacher Input Sought on Standards: A draft of proposed “Common Core Standards for K-12” has been released for comments. To read them and submit input visit www.corestandards.org. The deadline for submitting input is April 2.
US Dept. of Ed Wants NCLB Comments: The US Department of Education is seeking input on proposed changes to the Elementary and Secondary Schools Act (No Child Left Behind). Teachers are being asked to answer the following questions. To submit input visit http://www.ed.gov/blog/2010/02/teacher-to-teacherlistening-to-teachers-about-a-new-esea/. The questions are: Many teachers say they support ESEA’s accountability measures, but that they need to be fair, based on students’ academic growth, and can’t be arbitrary or based on a single test score. What are your thoughts on how we do this best? What would it look like in your classroom? What would tests have to look like for you to think they were fair?"
