APS Equal Opportunity Services Office Closed June 25, July 1: The APS EOS Office will be closed Friday, June 25, because staff will be attending the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission conference. The office also will be closed Thursday, July 1, because staff will be attending the Americans with Disabilities Act conference.
Benefit Dinner for Roosevelt Mid-School Student: A benefit dinner for APS Roosevelt Mid-School student Donovan Griego, who was recently diagnosed with Pediatric B-Cell Lymphoma, is set for 1 to 4 p.m., June 27 at Los Vecinos Community Center, 478 NM 333 (Rt. 66), Tijeras. Cost is $10 per plate. Home-cooked New Mexican food is featured. Donations can also be made in Griego’s name at any First Community Bank.
MHS Booster Golf Classic is June 26: The District 5AAAAA Champion Football Team –Manzano Monarchs—host a golf tourney beginning at 6:45 a.m., June 26, at Los Altos Golf Course. Awards and luncheon to follow. Call Sandra Train at 507-3155 to register.
Giddens Basketball Camp is July 26-29: J.R. Giddens of the NY Knicks is hosting his 2nd Annual Summer Hoops Camp basketball camp for ages 5–18, July 26-29, at Sandia High School, 7801 Candelaria Rd. Ethics Workshop set for July 29: The New Mexico Public Education Dept.’s Educator Ethics Bureau invites school administrators to an Ethics Workshop, July 29 at La Cueva High School Performing Arts Auditorium, 7801 Wilshire NE. Teacher Training at Valles Caldera National Preserves: Food and lodging are included in the cost of a teacher training at the Science Education Center in Jemez Springs. Course credit is also available. Training is from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.; dates and courses are: June 28-30 - Wildlife Ecology; July 12-14 – Geology; July 26-29 - Stream Ecology; and Aug. 9-11 - Botany. Nominations Sought for Youth Leadership Award: The global 2010 Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Award honors individuals 14 to 24 years of age who exhibit leadership and excellence to help preserve the natural world, protect animals or benefit the human community. Youth Federal Career Symposium is July 16: The League of United American Citizens (LULAC) invites high school students to explore opportunities offered by the federal government including summer jobs, scholarships, fellowships, internships and careers. The Youth/Collegiate Federal Career Symposium is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, July 16, at the Albuquerque Convention Center. It is a free event. The Symposium will include presentations by several federal officials who will tell their individual stories, describe opportunities in the federal government and provide information on how to get more information and apply. The students will also have the chance to visit the exhibit hall and engage in interactive activities. For more information, contact Mercedes Oliveri at molivieri@lulac.org. Lunch will be provided for those who register. Bus transportation from APS schools to the Convention Center may be available for students and their adult companions including teachers, career counselors and parents.
