Planning Session on Substance Use & Violence Prevention Set Feb. 28: The New Mexico Public Education Department School and Family Support Bureau are hosting a strategic planning session to develop a NM Statewide Strategic Plan that addresses the Prevention of Youth Substance Use and Violence in Schools from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Feb. 28 at the Roadrunner Food Bank, 5840 Office Blvd; lunch is provided. Heroes in Education Nominations Sought: Fidelity Investments and the Albuquerque Journal are seeking nominations for the metro-area's unsung "Heroes In Education." Nominees could be teachers, students, volunteers, business owners, organizations, or elected officials - anyone who is a champion for K-12 education, hasn’t been recognized for their work, and whose story may inspire others to action. Heroes will be recognized in a full-page profile in an issue of the Business Outlook and celebrated at a reception later in the year. Teacher Ambassador Fellowship: Applications for the U.S. Department of Education’s Teaching Ambassador Fellows will close on Feb. 22. Outstanding teachers with a record of leadership, strong communications skills, and insights into education policy based in classroom expertise have the opportunity to work on a full- or part-time basis in one of three paid positions—a Washington Fellowship, a full-time position based at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C.; a Classroom Fellowship that enables teachers to work on a part-time basis with regional education offices; or a Regional Fellowship, a full-time position at one of the department’s regional offices. Dyslexia Association Offers Student Scholarships: The Southwest Branch of the International Dyslexia Association announces a $1,000 scholarship for the 2012-2013 school year to a college-bound NM high-school senior, who is diagnosed with Dyslexia. A $2,000 award will also be granted to a college student with Dyslexia and two $1,000 scholarships for students in career-technical programs. Applicants must be NM residents and enrolled in an accredited certificate, associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree program. Science Paper Competition for Students in Grades 6-12: The 2012 New Mexico Junior Academy of Science Paper Competition is calling for student submissions (a paper of no more than 1500 words and a PowerPoint presentation of 10 minutes or less, detailing their scientific research). The competition is open to students, grades 6-8 (Junior Division) and grades 9-12 (Senior Division); entrance fee is $6 in a check made out to NMAS. The competition will be held 4 p.m. to finish, March 15 at UNM’s Johnson Center. Winners can compete at state and national levels. Instructions may be found at http://www.nmas.org/junior.html.
