APS Employees May Buy Discounted A is for Art! Tickets: For one week only, APS employees may buy discounted tickets for the A is for Art! gala and auction which will be held Friday, Sept. 9, at the Albuquerque Museum. The employee discount will be available from Monday, Aug. 22 - 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26. Discounted tickets are $12 each; regularly priced tickets are $25 for adults, $10 for students. The auction is a fundraiser for the APS Fine Arts Department and the APS Education Foundation. Young artists receive 40 percent of the sale. To buy tickets, call the Foundation at 878-6167. Discounted tickets may not be purchased online, but credit card orders will be taken over the phone.
New coordinator in the Translation and Interpretation Services office: Please join APS Translation and Interpretation Services in welcoming Manola Colter, the new coordinator for Translation and Interpretation Services and thanking Tomas Butchart for his excellent service to parents, schools and community and wishing him the very best in his retirement. Ms. Colter joins Jason Yuen, coordinator and Cathy Barranca, secretary. Qwest Grant Opportunity for Teachers: The 2011-2012 Qwest Grant for technology in education is available for application for teachers to request funding from $500 up to $5000. Walk and Roll to School Day is Oct. 5: The New Mexico Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program is encouraging students, parents, and staff to walk, bike and/or “roll” (skate, skateboard, use a wheelchair or scooter) to school on Oct. 5 to raise awareness of pedestrians and bicyclists and promote physical activity. Annual Scholarship Fundraising Golf Tourney set for Oct. 15: In honor of longtime APS employee Don Whatley, an annual scholarship fundraising golf tournament to benefit the APS Title I Homeless Project will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course. Legislators, union leaders, APS administrators and teachers, and all who wish to support the students in the Homeless Project are invited. Training for Level III Teachers, Counselors Who Want to Become Principals: An informational meeting will be held at 3 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1 at City Centre Conference Center about a grant awarded to APS, UNM, and the New Mexico School Leadership Institute to identify, train, and support principals to help improve student learning in APS high-need schools. Video Tutorials on Assistive Technology: Atomic Learning's “Assistive Technology Collection” includes short, show-and-tell video tutorials that show how to use and apply assistive technology. Hispanic Heritage Art Contest Open to All Students: Entry deadline is Sept. 19 for the Hispanic Leadership Outreach Committee at Sandia National Laboratories, Kirtland AFB, NNSA Sandia Site Office, and NNSA ABQ Complex’s Annual Youth Art Contest in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Water Resources Education Program for K-12: The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority offers a 2011-2012 Water Resources Education Program for grades K-12. Classroom presentations correlate science curriculum maps, standards, and benchmarks and include hands-on activities. Teacher professional development is also offered.
