Mary Olivas, Los Padillas ES

Mary Olivas started working with APS in 1984 as a bilingual tutor with Mrs. Mena. She then moved on to Whittier Elementary as a bilingual assistant and then as a kindergarten assistant with Sherry Doyen and Principal Dr. Nell New.

Mary began her long stay at Los Padillas Elementary School in 1987. She worked as a Title I assistant with Mary Armijo, Analee Maestas and Margie Aragon when they were teachers. Mary also worked with P. Ballen and Patrick Martinez in kindergarten.

Then she was a first-grade assistant with Christina Orozco and Bill Candelaria. Next she worked with Gina Gonzales Young and Virginia Saiz as a STARS Cross Cat educational assistant.

For Mary’s last years as an educational assistant she worked with the Juntos Para Los Ninos program. During this time she went to UNM to do her student teaching in second grade with Adela Harper, also at Los Padillas.

After getting her bachelor's degree in education with an endorsement in bilingual education and ESL, Mary started teaching second grade for summer school in 2003.  In the fall of that same year she became a first grade bilingual teacher.

Mary has looped every year with her students to second grade. She has worked with several great principals at Los Padillas including Francis Salazar, Robin Hazen, Dr. Analee Maestas, Margie Aragon, Sara Keeney and Mary Ellen Farrelly.

Mary has felt great pride teaching in the community where her father, grandparents, great-grandparents and most of her family were born. She and her husband Larry still live in this community. All three of their sons attended Los Padillas, Polk Middle School and graduated from Rio Grande High School.

Mary said she will miss the staff at Los Padillas and the great mentors she has had throughout her career. She will especially miss all of her supportive parents and students that she has had the opportunity to work with for many years at Los Padillas.
