April 19, 2012

Toni Berg, who has been a nurse/educator at New Futures High School for 36 years, recently received the Community award by Sigma Theta Tau/Gamma Sigma Chapter. Sigma Theta Tau is an international nursing honor society. Gamma Sigma is the local chapter. Berg received a certificate and a $100 cash prize during the local chapter's induction ceremony April 15.

During her career spanning four decades, Berg has served as health director, personal and child health instructor, healthy child development team teacher, childbirth education instructor, lactation consultant and school nurse. She has worked to identify the health needs of students and link them with community resources. “ I started working on this long before the concept of school-based health centers arrived in Albuquerque,” Berg said.

She is the contributing author of several publications including Prenatal Guidebook, Mother/Infant Care, Teenage Pregnancy: A New Beginning, and Working with Pregnant and Parenting Teens.

Berg has been a member of the board of directors for the International Childbirth Education Association, the conference planning committee for the New Mexico Breastfeeding Taskforce and the School Nurse Inservice Planning Committee.

She received the University of New Mexico College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010.
