Five APS Teachers Honored for Excellence in Teaching

Glen Lynn of Sierra Vista Elementary was one of six APS math teachers to be recognized by Sandia National Labs/Lockheed Martin.

For the past eight years Sandia National Labs/Lockheed Martin – Community Involvement Department has been recognizing outstanding Math teachers through a program called the

Pi Awards -Excellence in Math Teaching. Nominations for the Pi awards are submitted to Sandia by the school’s principal. Teachers who stand out for their superior teaching skills and ability to inspire learning in science are then chosen and they each receive a personal $500 check. An additional $500 will be given to the math department of their school.

Excellence in Math Teaching Awards “is our way as a good corporate citizen to recognize math teachers for their contributions, and encourage them to continue their outstanding efforts with the passion and pursuit of excellence they all possess”, says Amy Tapia, manager of Community Involvement, Sandia National Labs.

This year’s APS award winners are:

  • Glen Lynn, Sierra Vista Elementary
  • Barbara Lopez-Leger, Volcano Vista High School
  • Thelma Aragon, Reginald Chavez Elementary
  • Yanira Gurrola, Washington Middle School
  • Elizabeth Alvarado, Albuquerque High School
  • Susan King, Roosevelt Middle School.
