Dorene Kahl of Eldorado High School was awarded the 2012 Nancy Thompson Harris Award by the Albuquerque Community Foundation.

April 12, 2012

Dorene Kahl, an English teacher at Eldorado High School, was awarded the 2012 Nancy Thompson Harris Award for Excellence in Teaching Literature by the Albuquerque Community Foundation. The annual award honors an APS teacher who demonstrates a love for and quality in teaching high school language arts.

The honor includes a $2,500 cash award.

The Nancy Thompson Harris Fund was established in 1997 in memory of Nancy Thompson Harris, a senior and honors English teacher at Sandia High.

"This award is a huge honor for me. I’m in awe of the family, friends, and students of Nancy Thompson Harris for leaving such a generous legacy," Kahl said.

Kahl said she plans to use the cash award to attend and present at a conference sponsored by the National Association of Teachers of English in York, Great Britain.

"The award is going to help pay for airfare, conference registration, food, and lodging.  I couldn’t be more grateful or more delighted," Kahl said.
