Cathy Gutierrez, Harrison Middle School

Cathy Gutierrez, the counseling secretary at Harrison Middle School, recently received the 2011 South Valley Outstanding Citizen Award. She was recognized for her contributions to students and her community. Gutierrez has worked at Harrison for 16 years, spending the past 14 of them as co-coach of the school’s cheerleading team. While successful at sporting events and out-of-state competitions, Gutierrez also directs the team in numerous community service activities. Team members are expected to give back to the community. They serve needy families with food and supplies during the holiday season, raise funds for a local shelter for runaways and have walked for cancer and multiple sclerosis awareness, among other projects. Gutierrez also runs Harrison’s clothing bank, which provides items to help students meet the school’s dress code.
