APS Nursing Director Honored

Laura Case receives the New Mexico Nursing Excellence Award.

Laura Case, who has been the director of nursing services for Albuquerque Public Schools for the past two years, received the New Mexico Nursing Excellence Award in the category of nurse management/emerging leadership from the New Mexico Nursing Education Consortium during their annual banquet on Nov. 2 at the Hyatt Tamaya Resort.

Case has been a nurse for 29 years and oversees the practice of 136 school nurses in APS.

“She is unrelenting in her quest to improve the professional standing to schools nurses, to streamline and empower nursing care and to prevent illness and promote wellness for students,” Carolyn Williams, nurse at Tony Hillerman Mid-School, wrote in her nomination of Case.

The nominator cited among her accomplishments Case’s work with school nurses to set up the Schools Kits Influenza Immunization Project (SKIIP) clinics at schools, expanding participation in a nurse climate survey, with the results presented and change implemented via the School Nurse Leadership Council, and working on new evaluation forms for school nurses that use National Association of Schools Nurses (NASN) School Nurse Standards of Care as a guide for competencies.

Kris Meurer, executive director of the APS Student, Family and Community Supports Division that includes Case’s office, congratulated Case on the recognition. “APS is extremely lucky to have Laura in the leadership role for health services. She works very hard with the nurses at the district and school level to help assure that students are healthy and can attend school each day ready to learn. I am very pleased she was recognized for her efforts,” Meurer said.

Case holds a master’s degree in nursing from the University of New Mexico and in 2010 was honored as the New Mexico School Nurse Administrator of the Year.
