UNM/APS ESL Endorsement

2018 Summer Institute-Register by April 17

Students around the world

For the past nineteen summers, UNM and APS have sponsored an ESL Summer Institute designed to help in-service and pre-service teachers of all grade levels secure ESL endorsements. The 20th annual six-week  2018 Institute will be held at La Mesa Elementary School from June 4 to July 13. The institute runs Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. There will be an opportunity to work with ESL students at the Summer Institute.

The following courses are offered at the Summer Institute:

  •  LLSS 453/580 - Foundations of Bilingual Education/Seminar in the Education of the Bilingual Student
  •  LLSS 482/581 - Teaching English as a Second Language
  •  LLSS 459/559 - Second Language Literacy

The courses and the schedule are integrated; therefore students need to take all three courses. (If you have taken one of the courses, a Field Experience course can be substituted for it.) The application deadline for the Summer Institute is March 18, 2018. Notification of acceptance will be e-mailed to applicants a few days after receipt of the completed application. To apply to UNM in non-degree status, call 277-6044 or visit this website.

If you have any questions, please call 277-5282 or email Holbrook Mahn at If you are an APS teacher, contact the Department of Language and Cultural Equity at 881-9429 for information about tuition reimbursement
