Keep Health Insurance Costs Down by Completing Screening, Survey

APS employees who have health insurance through the district are being encouraged to complete both a biometric screening and an online personal health survey to keep premiums down for a third straight year.

As part of a continuing effort to improve employee health and reduce insurance costs, Albuquerque Public Schools is encouraging employees and spouses/domestic partners insured through the district to complete a biometric screening and a comprehensive personal health profile in the 2013 plan year that begins this July.

By participating in the health screening and online survey, employees and their spouses/domestic partners will, for the third year in a row, keep their medical plan contributions from increasing by $20 a month for individuals or $40 a month for employees with spouses/domestic partners insured through the district.

Employee Benefits is hosting biometric screenings at City Centre (the APS administrative building at 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE) this summer. Details are still being worked out, so check the APS website and your mail for more information. These screenings, which take about 20-30 minutes, provide a detailed assessment of an individual’s basic health indicators such as:

  • Blood pressure
  • Body Mass Index (calculated from height and weight)
  • Cholesterol
  • Blood Glucose and
  • Pulse/Heart rate.

APS will provide ample opportunities for employees and their spouses/domestic partners to have the screenings completed free-of-charge. Health care professionals will be available to go over the test results and recommend next steps for the patient’s well-being. All screenings must take place through APS. Unlike last time, screenings completed as part of an annual wellness visit won't count toward the health insurance incentive program.

Those insured through the district will be asked to fill out the 20-to-30 minute online health survey later in the year once they have the results from their biometric screenings.

Health profile results and health screening results are strictly confidential and protected by privacy laws. APS Employee Benefits will only receive aggregate data that identifies key risk areas among employees. This information will be used to develop a wellness program that serves the needs of employees.

More than 80 percent of employees and spouses/domestic partners insured through APS completed the screening and survey in the past couple of years.
