Join the APS Employee Fitness Challenge

Several APS employees, including Assistant Superintendent Diego Gallegos, participated in the Fitness Challenge kickoff last year.

APS is on the move again! Start the year off moving more and eating well by taking the Start! 8-Week Fitness Challenge.

How it Works

Compete with other employees to see who can take the most steps during the eight-week challenge. Register and log your steps from Jan. 26 to March 23 using the Start! tool at  If walking is not your activity of choice, no need to worry. The challenge includes all types of physical activity.

Participants can use pedometers to track steps, but a pedometer is not necessary to compete. The Start! tool will convert your favorite activities into steps automatically. Onsite fitness classes are being coordinated to offer employees a chance to explore different physical activities. Be on the lookout for a calendar of classes that you can sign up to try.

You can register anytime at Join on your own or as part of a worksite team.  Participation is free.

Be a Champion!

We’re recruiting “Challenge Champions” at all APS worksites to build excitement and rally co-workers to join and complete the challenge. Challenge champions will learn about the 2011 fitness challenge the online tool; discuss ways to create excitement for completing the challenge at each worksite; and talk with other champions and past winners about their success. They also will receive a free t-shirt, tools and other incentives.

Challenge Champions are expected to attend a 30-minute training session at 3:30, 4, 4:30 or 5 p.m. in the Rio Grande Room at City Centre on Tuesday, Jan. 18; or on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 3:30, 4 or 4:30 p.m. in the L.B. Johnson Mid-School library. Sign up for training by Friday, Jan. 14 by contacting Jennie McCary at or 855-9793.

Kick Off Event

Join us on Tuesday, Jan. 25 from 4-5:30 p.m. at the Fitness Challenge Kick-Off event. The location is still being determined. This is a chance to mingle with others, consult with wellness experts, get a free fitness assessment and register for the challenge and free fitness classes.

Win Prizes!

All individuals and teams who register and complete the challenge will be eligible for awards and prizes. Awards categories include:

  • Top steps for individuals and teams;
  • Most improved individuals;
