Cost of Background Checks for New Employees Goes Up

The increase only affects new employees and contractors; volunteer background checks still cost only $12.

The cost of background checks for new Albuquerque Public Schools employees and contractors will increase to $44 beginning Nov. 1. The $11 increase, from $33, was set by the state of New Mexico, which has contracted with a private company to handle electronic fingerprinting for public agencies including APS.

The increase in cost only affects new employees and contractors who must be fingerprinted as a condition of their employment with APS. Volunteer background checks, which don’t require fingerprinting, still cost only $12.

The New Mexico Department of Public Safety, which used to handle fingerprinting internally, has hired 3M Cogent to do the job. 3M Cogent is providing APS with a scanner for processing digital fingerprints. The state and FBI will still run the background checks using the fingerprint information provided by the private company.

New employees can pay by credit card, cashier’s check or money orders made out to 3M Cogent.
