Be Wary of Suspicious Email

The APS Technology Help Desk warns about email that can contain viruses and spyware, and expose users to online fraud.

The APs Technology Help Desk reminds employees not to click on any links or reply to any email that does not seem valid. These types of email can contain viruses and spyware and can also be used as a vehicle for online fraud such as phishing.

 How to spot spam or scam e-mail

  • You don’t know the sender
  • Contains misspellings (for example ‘p0rn’ with a zero) designed to fool spam filters
  • Makes an offer that seems too good to be true
  • The subject line and contents do not match
  • Contains an urgent offer end date (for example “Buy now and get 50% off”)
  • Contains a request to forward an email to multiple people and may offer money for doing so
  • Contains a virus warning
  • Contains attachments, which could include.exe files
  • Contains a link to click on
  • The email appears to come from banks, credit card companies, online shops, as other trusted organizations
  • The sender's email is different than the organization's
  • The email is sent from a completely different address or a free webmail address
  • The email requires or suggests changing account information via website or forms other than 

Tips for Using email safely

  • Do not open suspicious emails
  • Do not forward suspicious emails
  • Do not open attachments from unknown senders
  • Do not readily click on links in email from unknown sources
  • Do not respond to emails from unknown sources
  • Delete the suspicious email from your inbox and deleted items folders
