Programs for Students with Visual Impairments (VI Programs)

Special Education Department District programs are designed for students who have not exhibited success in a more inclusive setting.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  placement in any special education district program listed below must be determined by your child’s IEP team.  Please contact the Instructional Manager for the program if you have additional questions about placement or about a specific program.

Programs for Students with Visual Impairments are specifically designed to meet the needs of students whose primary disability and barrier to educational progress is having a vision impairment and who require daily instruction from a teacher of the visually impaired in compensatory or adaptive skills related to the vision impairment. The programs utilize specialized techniques and instructional materials designed for students who are blind or visually impaired and are appropriate for students whose learning media assessment recommends the use of Braille instruction, orientation and mobility, and the expanded core curriculum for Blind and Visually Impaired Children, which includes compensatory skills, and the use of assistive technology and adapted equipment.
