Each year public schools in New Mexico are categorized by the state under the federally mandated No Child Left Behind Act. Categories are based on results of the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment given in the spring to students in grades 3-8 and 11.

Schools are rated based on test participation, reading and math scores, and other academic indicators. Schools are categorized as meeting or not meeting adequate yearly progress (AYP).

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)

In order to meet AYP, schools need to:

1. Achieve 95% participation rate on state assessments.
2. Retain targets for proficiency or reduce non-proficiency.
3. Reach targets for the attendance rate for elementary and middle schools and the graduation rate for high schools.

Schools that do not meet AYP are assigned a School Improvement Designation, derived from the past and current year accountability ratings. School Improvement Designations fall into one of three categories:

1. Performance Warned
2. School Improvement
3. Corrective Action
