  • First IB Graduate Class! The first 15 students to complete the rigorous International Baccalaureate Program have graduated from Sandia High School. Sandia became an authorized IB World School in 2013, the first comprehensive high school in New Mexico to offer the challenging program. Thoughhoused at Sandia, qualified students from around Albuquerque are invited and encouraged to participate in the program. Call them pioneers – the 15 students who as juniors entered the program that stresses critical thinking and problem solving skills. The challenging IB curriculum, designed to prepare high school students for the rigor they will face at the university level, is comprised of six core subjects plus a Theory of Knowledge class. Students also are required to be involved in sports and/or the arts, acquire community service hours, research and write an extended essay and take written exams at the end of the program. Their hard work paid off. Each of the 15 students who completed the IB diploma program received college scholarships, some of them substantial. Nathan Bolanos, for example, got a full-ride scholarship to Princeton. Morgan Miller got the Daniels scholarship that will pay for her education at the University of San Diego, and JaNeisha Brown got a $32,000 scholarship to St. Johns University in New York. “I can’t say enough about these IB graduates who were willing to work hard to complete this challenging program,” said APS Interim Superintendent Dr. Brad Winter. “They are now well prepared for college and successful careers. I wish them, and all of our 2015 graduates, all the best in the journey they now are about to embark upon.” The IB graduates and the schools they will attend are: · Brenna, UNM · JaNeisha, St. Johns University · Breda, American University in Washington D.C. · Elizabeth, San Diego State University · Kinsey, Trinity University · Mateo, University of Vermont · Victoria, UNM · Mary, UNM · Nathan, Princeton · Valeria, UNM · Sarah, High Point University · Mikaela, NMSU · Jourden, ENMU · Mari, Arizona State · Morgan, University of San Diego There are 37 students in the IB class that will graduate in 2016.
