The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education last week unanimously voted to endorse the Hispanic Education Act that was introduced in this session of the New Mexico Legislature by Rep. Rick Miera (D-Albq.)
Meeting in a special session in Santa Fe last Wednesday, the APS Board of Education voted to endorse the Hispanic Education Act, which would create the Hispanic Education Office within the NM Public Education Dept.
The bill calls for the office to study and develop processes to help close the achievement gap that affects Hispanic students in New Mexico. This would be accomplished in-part by the development of a five-year strategic plan and the creation of a Hispanic education advisory council.
APS Board of Education member Lorenzo Garcia said that the act is important because it supports the goal of assuring all students are successful.
“The Hispanic Education Act underscores our commitment to the success of every student,” Garcia said. “It will provide the district and the state with new ways to address the education needs of this population.”
APS Superintendent Winston Brooks said that the Hispanic Education Act was part of the district’s legislative agenda and it will work for its passage.
“We look forward to helping set the pace of educational reform as teachers and all staff focus on changing educational outcomes for all students,” Brooks added.
Every child has the right to a quality education and APS is committed to providing that education. For more information about Albuquerque Public Schools visit www.aps.edu.
