Two More APS Graduates Receive National Merit Scholarships

July 17, 2013

Two recent Albuquerque Public Schools high school graduates have been named winners of scholarships worth up to $2,000 sponsored by the university they plan to attend.

The APS seniors join 4,300 other recent graduates around the country who have been awarded National Merit Scholarships sponsored by colleges and universities where they plan to attend school in the fall. They were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists.

Named as scholarship winners were Ruby Mills, who recently graduated from Albuquerque High, and Isaac Ramsey, who recently graduated from Sandia High. Mills plans to attend the University of New Mexico and study applied mathematics. Ramsey also plans to attend UNM and study electrical engineering.

“We are very proud of these students and the honor they have received in being awarded these scholarships,” said APS Supt. Winston Brooks.

The students qualified as semifinalists based on their performance on the 2011 pre-SAT. To advance as a finalist, students must continue to have an outstanding academic record, be recommended by their school principal, and earn high SAT scores during their junior or senior year.

The students also submitted applications with essays and information about their participation in school and community activities.

These scholars were selected from finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s high school graduating seniors.
