Two APS Students Get Big Money for Perfect Attendance

Victoria Rodriguez of Sandia and Rachel Moroney of Volcano Vista each received $3,000 from the ABQ New Car & Truck Dealers Association.

Neither high school senior Victoria Rodriguez of Sandia nor sophomore Rachel Moroney of Volcano Vista has missed a day of school. Ever.

Their perfect attendance allowed them to put their names in a drawing sponsored by the Albuquerque New Car & Truck Dealers Association on Friday, June 12. And they won.

Victoria and Rachel each got a $3,000 cash prize, as did two other students, a recent graduate from Rio Rancho High and a junior from the ASK Academy in Rio Rancho.

This the second year the Albuquerque New Car & Truck Dealers Association has awarded checks to one student from each grade who had perfect attendance for the school year that just ended.

Victoria, who said she hasn't missed a day of school since starting preschool, is an honor student at Sandia, active in Senate, DECA and National Honor Society. She also is a member of the Matadors' golf team.

Rachel, who said she hasn't missed a day of school since starting kindergarten, plans to get involved with DECA at Volcano Vista this coming school year.

APS Interim Superintendent Brad Winter and Mayor Richard J. Berry kicked off the drawing, which took place in a packed library at Del Norte High School. More than 120 APS students had perfect attendance in 2014-15 and were eligible for the drawing.

“It's not easy to attend class every day, but you can't learn if you're not in school," said Winter. "I commend these students for understanding the value of their education and for making an effort to be at school each and every day."

“It is quite an accomplishment that all these students had perfect attendance and earned the chance to win the cash,” said Charles Henson who coordinates the drawing for the Albuquerque New Car & Track Dealers Association.
