Three APS Teachers Named Golden Apple Winners

The prestigious award recognizes teachers for their impact on students’, professional development, and community involvement.

Three Albuquerque Public Schools elementary school teachers have been named 2015 Golden Apple award winners:

  • Agapita Hopkins, adapted PE teacher at Chaparral and Painted Sky
  • Paula Jackson, PE teacher at Monte Vista
  • Patricia Martinez, special education teacher at Kirtland Elementary.

Each will receive a cash stipend of $4,000 to be used toward their professional development.  They also will become part of the Golden Apple Academy of Fellows, an ongoing professional community of outstanding teachers.

The recipients were nominated last spring by students, parents, other teachers, principals, or community members.  Nominees complete a lengthy application describing their teaching methodology, professional development experiences, community volunteerism, and other aspects of their teaching philosophy.

In all, 16 teachers from across New Mexico were selected as finalists.  In the final stage of the selection process, a committee conducted a full-day site visit at each finalist’s school.  The team observed the teacher in the classroom and interviewed the principal, other teachers, parents, students, and the finalist.

The Golden apple Tribute to Teacher Excellence will be held on Friday, April 8, 2016 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Albuquerque.  For more information contact the Golden Apple Foundation of New Mexico at 505-268-5337 or visit their website.
