Thank You for Your Service

A soldier with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division visits MacArthur Elementary School to say thanks for the care packages.

Cpl. Ryan Gonzales, a member of Volcano Vista's first graduating class, stopped by MacArthur Elementary School on the Friday before Veterans Day to answer questions about military service and to thank students and staff for care packages they sent to him and others in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

"There weren't any grocery stores where we were, no Smith's or Albertson's, so we couldn't get that stuff," Cpl. Gonzales told a group of kindergarteners about the baby wipes, toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, chapstick and other toiletries that were sent to the troops stationed in Iraq.

Oh, and the Girl Scout cookies, too.

"You're welcome," one kindergartener responded.

Cpl. Gonzales, whose mother-in-law Lauri Welch is a teacher at the school, passed around the maroon beret that signifies the paratroopers as he explained to his young audience that his job involves jumping out of airplanes as they're moving in the sky.

Yes, it's dangerous, he responded to one student's question, but not that dangerous thanks to the years of tradition and training that has gone into the craft.

MacArthur collected enough items to send 40 care packages to Cpl. Gonzales and his fellow soldiers earlier this year.
