State Testing Begins After Spring Break

APS students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11 will take the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment beginning Tuesday, March 19.

APS students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11 will begin taking state mandated tests when they return from spring break the week of March 18. The Standards Based Assessment is given to public and charter school students throughout New Mexico.

The standardized test is used to assess whether students meet grade-specific state standards. Beginning with this year's graduating class, the SBA also will serve as the high school exit exam. Students in the class of 2013 and beyond will have to pass the reading, math and science sections of the high school SBA by the end of their senior year in order to obtain a high school diploma.

In addition, the state's new A-F school grading system relies heavily on SBA results.

Testing Schedule

  • Elementary school students in third, fourth and fifth grade will take the New Mexico Standards Based Assessment during the mornings of Tuesday, March 19, through Thursday, March 28. Afternoons will be for make-up testing only. Schools are closed on Friday, March 29, for the Vernal Holiday (Good Friday).
  • Middle school students will take the SBA on Tuesday, March 19, through Friday, March 22.
  • High school sophomores and juniors will take the reading and math portions of the SBA on Tuesday, March 19, and Wednesday, March 20. Juniors only will take the science portion of the test on Thursday, March 21. Sophomores won’t have school that day. Freshmen and seniors won’t have school during the three days of testing.

Sophomores who don’t pass the test can retake it in the spring of their junior year. Juniors who don’t pass the test can retake it in the fall of their senior year. Students who fail the retake exam may use an Alternative Demonstration of Competency.
