Six APS Students Going to State Spelling Bee

The state bee will be held in March.

Six students from across the district will take part in a statewide spelling bee. They include:

1st Place:  Evelyn Pinon, 8th Grade Student at Tony Hillerman Middle School

2nd Place:  Brayden Diaz, 6th Grade Student at Cleveland Middle School

3rd Place:  Phoebe Witt, Student at Bandelier Elementary School

4th Place:  Dhruv Grandhe, North Star Elementary School

5th Place (Tie):  Seth Bryant, Desert Ridge Middle School

5th Place (Tie):  Samantha Selever, Ventana Ranch Elementary School

Pinon won on the championship word of Schloss, which is a German Castle. 

The pronouncer for the district bee was APS Board of Education Member Barbara Petersen.  APS Director of Charter Schools Joseph Escobedo, APS Summer Program Instructional Manager Laura Valdez, and APS Education Foundation Development Manager Lawren McConnell served as judges for the event.

 More than 40 students from middle and elementary schools from across the district participated in the Jan. 18 competition. The students must have won a competition at their school prior to the district competition.  

The state bee will be held in March.
