Principal Celebrated for Community Schools Leadership

Peggy Candelaria of Manzano Mesa Elementary School will be honored during the national Community Schools Conference in Albuquerque April 6-8.

Manzano Mesa Elementary Principal Peggy Candelaria will receive the Community Schools Educator Leadership Award at a national conference to be held April 6-8 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

“Your school has been an example to others across Albuquerque and in fact across the country. You have created a strong Community Schools Council that supports your school and the broader community,” said Martin Blank, Director of Coalition for Community Schools.  “You have been innovative and successful.”

Candelaria began the nation’s first Homework Diner, where families gathered once a week for a homestyle meal followed by homework time. English- and Spanish-speaking tutors are available to help parents and guardians tackle the homework with their students. It’s an effective way to bring educators and families together, to create a sense of community and provide support that might not be available otherwise.

Community organizations that provide financial support for the APS Homework Diner include the ABC Community School Partnership, CNM, the City of Albuquerque and the Roadrunner Food Bank. New Mexico PBS provides iPads for the Homework Diner, student volunteer chefs from area high schools give their time as well as volunteers from Kirtland Air Force Base.

Candelaria will receive her award at a reception during the conference.
