Measles Outbreak Prompts Schools to Enforce Immunization Laws

APS students have until Feb. 20 to provide up-to-date shot records or a state-approved exemption.

Due to the measles outbreak spreading across the country, Albuquerque Public Schools is enforcing state immunization requirements. Letters have been sent home with students whose shot records aren't up-to-date, giving them until Feb. 20 to provide proof of immunization or a state-approved exemption form.

Students who don't meet this deadline won't be allowed to return to school until proof is provided.

If there is a case of measles or any other vaccine-preventable disease at a school, students who haven't been immunized -- either because their shots aren't up-to-date or they have a state-approved exemption -- may have to stay home from school for about three weeks. These students would be considered contagious, therefore on-site homework assistance such as home hospital wouldn't be available to them.

According to state law and APS policy, students can't attend school without providing proof of up-to-date immunizations. The exception is for those who get a state-approved waiver.

Parents who have questions should contact the nurse at their child's school.

Here is a list of places where parents can take their children to get up-to-date shots:
