May Declared APS Hero Month by United Blood Services New Mexico

Donors at the UBS Albuquerque center can fill out the interactive signage when donating in May.

May 1, 2012

May has been declared APS Hero Month by United Blood Services New Mexico to recognize the involvement of APS students, faculty, and staff in the successful coordination of and participation in blood drives that are critical to the blood supply.

Donors who visit the United Blood Services Center at 1515 University Blvd. NE will have the opportunity to “Support the Potential" with interactive signage to be placed in the donor waiting and canteen areas.

The United Blood Services website will reflect the organization's support and gratitude for APS, and information will be posted about the partnership between APS and UBS on both organizations'  Facebook pages throughout the month.

APS has hosted more than a dozen blood drives this school year, donating hundreds of pints of blood and saving thousands of lives.

The final APS blood drive of the school year will be Thursday, May 9, at the Alice & Bruce King Education Center (the APS administrative building) at 6400 Uptown Blvd. NE (map).

If saving lives isn’t incentive enough, United Blood Services, through its Heroes Squared Program, is giving $5 to the APS Education Foundation Horizon Campaign for every pint of blood donated at school and APS administrative blood drives. The Horizon Campaign provides funding for literacy, fine arts, middle and high school activities and science/technology/engineering/math.

United Blood Services plans to present a check to the Foundation during the June 6 Board of Education meeting.

It’s great to give. It’s nice to support students and teachers in the classroom. But maybe the best reason to donate blood on May 9 is ice cream. It is a "pint for a pint" blood drive, with Dreyer’s giving free ice cream to all donors.

Employees can sign up for the blood drive online by going to the United Blood Services websiteThis is an external link.. The sponsor code is citycentre. They can also call for an appointment at 246-1457.

A third option is to sign up in person from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, at City Centre in front of room 101W. Employees who make an appointment at that time can get free blood typing.
