Erika Zambrano, and eighth-grader at John Adams Middle School, took third place in the recent state Spanish spelling bee out of a field of 40 students from across New Mexico. She was the only APS student to finish near the top.

The 19th annual event is sponsored by the New Mexico Association for Bilingual Education, the National Hispanic Cultural Center, the Spanish Resource Center and Santillana, USA. It took 19 rounds to crown a winner.
