Emerson Pre-K Students Get Head Start with New Books

Emerson pre-k students line up with their books by the ReadMobile.

September 11, 2012

Pre-kindergarten students at Emerson Elementary discovered the joy of reading last week when the We Give Books ReadMobile visited the school to deliver books and the message that reading is fun. Emerson was one of 50 stops on the ReadMobile’s national tour.

Staff from the program, sponsored by the Pearson Foundation, delivered copies of “Skippyjon Jones” to the eager 4-year-olds. Students heard another story read to them and made an art project. The Molina Foundation, originally part of Molina Health Care, also sponsored the ReadMobile’s Albuquerque stop.

The ReadMobile is hosting reading celebrations for children as they prepare to participate in Jumpstart’s Read for the Record, an annual day dedicated to raising awareness for early literacy. This year’s Read for the Record day is Oct. 4.

The We Give Books campaign is a major effort by the Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation to equip families, classrooms and libraries with print and online books for children. The Pearson Foundation has donated more than a million books so far and has challenged students across the United States to read a million more by the end of this school year.

A digital library with hundreds of children’s books is also available for teachers and families to access for free – anywhere, anytime – at www.wegivebooks.com.
