Eagles Soar into Nationals for Educators Rising

The program helps prepare students for the teaching field.

Eldorado students John Leppala and Dan Ngo have qualified for the national Educators Rising Conference in Boston this summer.  The pair competed with students from across New Mexico in various competitions at the state conference held at New Mexico State University.  Leppala placed 1st in Impromptu Speaking and 3rd in Public Speaking, while Ngo placed 5th in Public Speaking.

Educators Rising is an organization that encourages high school students to consider careers in education.  Teacher leaders Miskee Blatner and Jamie Escobedo took nine students from Eldorado to the conference.  The APS Education Foundation supported this program through the Achieve grant.

High school students from school districts in Aztec, Questa, Pecos, Magdalena, Espanola, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Carlsbad, Gadsden, Bernalillo, Deming and Las Cruces attended the state conference, along with teachers from Roswell, Rio Rancho and Cuba who wanted to explore the Educators Rising organization.

Karen Trujillo, director of K-12 Outreach for The Alliance for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at NMSU and one of the organizers of the state conference at NMSU, said she hopes students who qualified to attend the national conference will be able to attend. The students who qualified are raising funds to pay for the trip.

New Mexico State University Journalism student Adriana Chavez contributed to this story.
