Del Norte Students Raise Funds for Blue Star Mothers

Linda Ver Wey receives a check for the Blue Star Mothers from a Del Norte class.

May 22, 2012

A simple discussion in a sociology class at Del Norte High School led to a fund raiser that made a military mom very happy.

Teacher Lesly Stern’s class decided on its own that it wanted to sell wristbands that say “responsibility” and “caring” on them. The only question, then, was what to do with the proceeds.

When they discovered that the son of one of the school’s employees is deployed in Afghanistan, that’s where they wanted to help. Del Norte health assistant Linda Ver Wey is a member of Blue Star Mothers, an organization that raises awareness and support for the troops overseas. She belongs to the group because her son is one of those troops.

The class presented Ver Wey with a check for $100 from their fund raiser, which she said will be used to send care packages of supplies such as books over to Afghanistan. She said the troops look forward to presents from home and are very grateful.
