Knights Fine Arts Program Up for Bid

Del Norte's fine arts program will be auctioned during A is for Art! Friday

The more than 150 works of visual art tend to steal the show at the annual A is for Art! student art auction and gala which will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. Friday at Hotel Albuquerque.

But this year’s event – which includes dinner, silent and live actions, and musical performances – is a celebration of all fine arts in Albuquerque Public Schools.

Donors will be able to bid on the entire fine arts program at Del Norte High School during the live auction portion of Friday’s event.

“We wanted to make our audience aware that fine arts encompasses many disciplines and talents; not unlike athletics, where you can have everything from softball to football to tennis,” said APS Education Foundation Executive Director Phill Casaus.

Del Norte, like all APS high schools, has vibrant offerings but can always use more resources. In addition to the traditional fine arts programs such as drama, band, choir, orchestra and visual arts, Del Norte also offers Digital Film and New Digital Media classes that will benefit from the auction.

Del Norte fine arts students and teachers will be on stage for the live auction, where they will share more about their creative interests and the needs of their programs.

“The A is for Art! auction will certainly yield some tangible rewards in terms of financial contribution, but more than that it has become a symbol of the value that our district places on arts education and the work of our young artists, musicians and performers,” said Aimee Milazzo, Del Norte assistant principal.

Bidding to sponsor a fine arts program began last year with Atrisco Heritage Academy, which sold for $1,300. The schools are selected for this honor in a blind drawing.

But the choices aren’t limited. Outside of the live auction, donors will have the opportunity to support any of the Albuquerque high school fine arts departments during the night. The Fund-A-Program will allow donors to pledge amounts of their choosing, with 100 percent of the contribution going directly to the program of their choice.

A is for Art! will be held Friday at Hotel Albuquerque. The event, which aims to raise money for fine arts in schools, is scheduled to go from 5:30-9 p.m. The silent auction runs from 5:30-7:30 p.m., with the live auction to follow. Tickets are $50.
