The new Albuquerque Public Schools website, www.aps.edu, was honored with a top prize at the New Mexico Technology Council’s annual TechEx Awards recently, and Dr. Tom Ryan, APS chief information officer, won an achievement award for his overall, long-term, positive impact on the New Mexico technology community. The awards are designed to recognize excellence in technology throughout New Mexico.
APS won the award for its website’s innovation and impact on the community. The new site focuses on the needs of the community by providing information for students, parents and staff. So far, it has proven very successful. Since its launch in January 2010, the site has received nearly three million page views.
“We are proud of the APS web team and all of those who worked to create a communication tool that is informative, current and easy to access,” said APS Superintendent Winston Brooks.
The technology behind the site is a free, open source content management tool that makes it easy to post the latest news and events from the district. The district will expand the website in the coming years to include various APS departments and, eventually, all APS schools.
Ryan has worked in education for over 30 years as a teacher, principal and leader in APS administration. In those three decades, he has made a substantial impact on the community through his constant focus on equipping students with the technology they need to succeed.
“Tom is determined to ensure that New Mexico’s children benefit from good technology,” said Brooks. “While equipping classrooms with electronic chalkboards, developing online schools and making sure schools have high speed internet access, Tom never wanders from that core goal: to use technology to help kids learn, and help teachers teach.”
Despite his numerous accomplishments, which include the esteemed Milken Educator Award for excellence in education, Ryan remains humble, willing to talk about his many initiatives only as team efforts.
Sponsored by the New Mexico Technology Council (NMTC), the New Mexico Technology Excellence Awards, now in its fifth year, recognize exceptional individual and organizational excellence in technology throughout the state. In addition, the program allows NMTC to directly support technology education for New Mexico students.
