APS Recognizes its Athletes of the Year

Kevin Barker of Sandia football and Quint Seckler of Eldorado swimming are named coaches of the year.

Eldorado High School hosted the Albuquerque Public Schools Athletes and Coaches of the Year ceremony last week, recognizing a male and female nominee from each school as well as a male sport and female sport coach of the year. Athletes are recognized for their athletic, academic and community service accomplishments.

The male sport coach of the year is Kevin Barker, the Sandia High football coach who lead his team to the state finals.

The female sport coach of the year is Quint Seckler of Eldorado, who helped both the girls and boys swim teams win state championships.

The male athlete of the year is Nate Goode, a football player and wrestler at Atrisco Heritage Academy, who earned a 3.28 grade point average.

The female athlete of the year is Jenna Thurman, who maintained a 4.3 grade point average while playing soccer and running cross country and track for Del Norte.

The APS female athletes of the year nominees are:

Albuquerque High: Natalia Rivera, volleyball/track (3.6 GPA)

Atrisco Heritage Academy: Ashley Smith, volleyball/basketball (3.5 GPA)

Cibola: Hannah Wauffle, soccer/basketball/track (3.08 GPA)

Del Norte: Jenna Thurman, soccer/cross country/track (4.3 GPA)

Eldorado: Jessica Nelson, cross country/tennis/golf (4.5 GPA)

Highland: Sydney Graham, basketball (4.0 GPA)

La Cueva: Hattie Schunk, soccer/swimming/track (4.43 GPA)*

Manzano: Katie Roach, volleyball/basketball/softball (3.21 GPA)

Rio Grande: Dailene Lujan, volleyball/basketball/softball (3.36 GPA)

Sandia: Bobbi Pierson, golf/basketball (3.77 GPA)

Valley: Eden Santistevan, volleyball/track (3.8 GPA)

Volcano Vista: Tricia Grajeda, cross country/swimming/track (4.5 GPA)

West Mesa: Jaylyn Espinosa, soccer/basketball/track (3.78 GPA)

*Hattie also was named the 2013 Female Scholar Athlete award winner by the New Mexico Athletic Directors Association.

Atrisco Heritage Academy: Nate Goode, football/wrestling (3.28 GPA)

Eldorado: Cullen Neal, basketball (3.98 GPA)

Highland: Mustafa Mudada, football/track (2.8 GPA)

La Cueva: Clinton Silver, football/wrestling/track (4.29 GPA)

Manzano: Christopher Martinez, wrestling/baseball (3.35 GPA)

Rio Grande: Dustin LaMar, football/swimming/track (2.65 GPA)

Sandia: Craig Coffman, football/baseball (3.9 GPA)

Valley: Esteban Loera, football/wrestling (3.5 GPA)

Volcano Vista: Joe Searcy-Ortega, football/track (2.71 GPA)
