APS Recognizes its 2014 Athletes of the Year

Kurt Henry of Albuquerque High and Nick Martinez of La Cueva are named coaches of the year.

Volcano Vista High School hosted the annual Albuquerque Public Schools Athletes and Coaches of the Year ceremony Monday, recognizing a male and female nominee from each school as well as a male sport and female sport coach of the year. Athletes are recognized for their athletic, academic and community service accomplishments.

The male sport coach of the year is Kurt Henry, Albuquerque High track and field coach.

The female sport coach of the year is Nick Martinez, the La Cueva cross country coach.

The male athlete of the year is Mike Budick of Volcano Vista. He is a football player, wrestler and track and field thrower for the Falcons.

The female athletes of the year are soccer and basketball player Hannah Frenske of Volcano Vista and Kim Chapman of Cibola who ran cross country and track and field and also plays basketball.

The APS female athletes of the year nominees are:

AHS: Chlore Lee - tennis

AHA: Breana Nevarez - volleyball, softball

CHS: Kim Chapman - cross country, basketball, track & field

DNHS: Marissa Gutierrez - cross country, basketball, track & field

EHS: Crissey Amberg - cross country, basketball, track & field

HHS: Destiney Thayer - volleyball, track & field

LCHS: Hannah Hawash - basketball, track & field

MHS: Kaya Davis - soccer, basketball, track & field

RGHS: Jenneva Lujan - soccer, basketball

SHS: Alayna Latimore - cross country, basketball, track & field

VHS: Korina Grajeda - volleyball

VVHS: Hannah Fenske - soccer & basketball

WMHS: Donna Garcia - volleyball, basketball, softball

APS male athletes of the year nominees are:

AHS: Andres Gutierrez-Delgadillo - soccer, track & field

AHA: Corbin Waquie - cross country, basketball

CHS: Derek Martinez - football, basketball, track & field

DNHS: Chris O'Mary - football, wrestling, golf

EHS: Taylor Potter - cross country, track & field

HHS: Bryan Medina - football, basketball

LCHS: Derek Kane - football, track & field

MHS: Corey Morrow - football, wrestling

RGHS: Logan Wolfel - football, wrestling, baseball

SHS: Tim Brennan - football, basketball

VHS: Bo Coleman - football, basketball, baseball

VVHS: Mike Budick - football, wrestling, track & field

WMHS: Jaemin Ramirez - football, baseball
