APS Opens New Food Services Facility

The project includes food preparation, cold and dry storage areas.

The Albuquerque Public Schools today celebrated the opening of a new food and nutrition services facility at 800 Louisiana Blvd. NE.

The $14.2 million project was completed earlier this month and consists of 102,000 square feet of space to be used for both dry and cold food storage, kitchen facilities for food preparation, equipment repair, and administrative and training offices.

APS Board of Education President Dr. Don Duran and APS Superintendent Brad Winter showed off the new facilities during a press conference this afternoon.

“This new facility will help the district provide nutritious, well-balanced meals to the 88,000 students of the district each day,” Winter said.

He noted that the new building consolidates three facilities into one. “Last year we had the central kitchen area at the Lincoln Complex, cold storage and administrative offices at the Rankin warehouse and dry food storage at a rented facility near Balloon Fiesta Park. Having all our facilities in one location will make food preparation much more efficient,” Winter said.

Sandra Kemp, APS executive director of food and nutrition services, said the money saved by having all the facilities in one area will mean more money can be put into nutritious meals for students. “We feed not only APS students, but also have contracts to provide meals for students in private, parochial and charter schools in the district,” Kemp said.

The APS Food and Nutrition Services Department also provide meals throughout the summer for the city of Albuquerque’s free summer food program for children up to age 18. Funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the program feeds youngsters around the county at schools, parks and community centers.=

Gerald A. Martin was the general contractor on the project and Studio SW Architects was in charge of the design of the facility.
